Scripting & Dream Journaling: How to Write Your Future Self
What if you could sit down for a few quiet minutes and write about the person you are becoming?
Not just what you want to have, but how you want to feel, what you want to learn,
what kind of habits you want to build, and what kind of life you want to create.
That’s the idea behind scripting and dream journaling.
Both practices give you a space to put your thoughts on paper, imagine possibilities, and become more intentional about your future.
What Is Scripting?
Scripting is a journaling practice where you write about your desired future as though you are describing an experience.
For example, instead of writing:
“I hope I become confident.”
You might write:
“I feel comfortable expressing my ideas.
I trust myself more, and I don’t feel like I have to be perfect before I begin.”
The purpose isn’t to guarantee that the future will happen exactly as you’ve written it.
Instead, scripting can help you clarify what you want and think about the actions that could move you toward it.
Your script can be one paragraph, a whole page, or even a few sentences.
🫧 What Is Dream Journaling?
Dream journaling is broader.
Instead of only writing about a specific future,
you can write about your dreams, ideas, goals, feelings, and the kind of life you would like to experience.
You might imagine:
* Your ideal morning
* Your future workspace
* A career you’re interested in
* Places you’d love to visit
* Skills you want to learn
* How you’d like to feel in your everyday life
* Habits you’d like to develop
Think of it as creating a little written picture of the life you’re working toward.
How to Write Your Future Self
Start with one simple question:
“Who am I becoming?”
Then choose a few areas of your life.
Mind:
How do I want to think and feel?
Goals:
What am I working toward?
Learning:
What skills do I want to develop?
Lifestyle:
What would my everyday routine look like?
Relationships:
How do I want to treat myself and others?
Creativity:
What do I want to create?
You don’t have to answer everything in one sitting. Choose whichever area feels meaningful today.
Write in the Present Tense
If you enjoy scripting, present-tense writing can make your visualization feel more immediate.
Instead of:
“One day I will become a designer.”
Try:
“I am developing my design skills and creating work that I’m proud of.”
Notice the difference: the second version also leaves room for real action and growth.
You aren’t pretending you’ve already completed everything. You’re describing the direction you’re moving toward.
Add Details
The little details are what make a journal entry feel personal.
Ask yourself:
What am I doing?
Where am I?
What am I learning?
How do I spend my time?
What habits have I built?
What makes me proud?
For example:
“I start my mornings calmly. I spend time learning, creating, and working toward my goals.
I don’t expect myself to be perfect. I enjoy seeing my progress, even when it happens slowly.”
It doesn’t need to sound poetic.
It just needs to sound like you.
Turn Your Dream Into Action
After writing your future-self entry, choose one tiny action that matches it.
If your future self is a confident designer → create one design.
If your future self speaks another language → study a few words.
If your future self is organized → plan tomorrow.
If your future self takes better care of their time → create a simple routine.
Your journal gives you the direction.
Your actions help you move there.
Create Your Future-Self Journal
You can make scripting part of your weekly routine.
Try writing:
Monday: What am I working toward?
Wednesday: What progress have I made?
Friday: What did I learn?
Sunday: What does my future self need from me next week?
You can also keep your favorite entries in a dedicated journal or planner so you can return to them later.
One Last Reminder
Your future self isn’t a completely different person waiting somewhere in the distance.
They’re built through the tiny choices you make today.
Write about the life you hope to create.
Write about the person you want to become.
Then choose one small step and begin.
Dream it. Write it. Build it. ♡
